Month of Sundays Project: March 2007

brown-turtleneck-light-jacket-pink-skirt-and-boots.JPGOne thing I have been trying to discipline myself to is trying on my clothes before Sunday morning.

What I learned when I tried on the first outfit, for the wintery part of March:

  • It works!
  • In the sun, the tights clash with the boots. (Not uncommon when mixing browns.)
  • The skirt sticks to the tights, as any unlined skirt does, but it’s wearable. (I don’t do slips.)

What I learned when I tried on the next one:

(If you’ve been around any length of time, you’ve seen this sweater with the groovy shirt under it many times. I don’t wear it that often, really, but it is remarkably easy for me to wear.)

  • If my feet being cold is my priority, this will be my choice.
  • My brown suede belt doesn’t fit in these belt loops (good to know before the Sunday morning scramble).
  • The skirt really needs to be ironed!

The white jacket looks good buttoned up, but I might play around a little with t-shirts. Like Ma Petite Chou, I am looking forward to wearing white.

yellow-print-shirt-pink-skirt-and-wedges.JPGNow is the time, I suppose, to refer to my prior post, Avoiding the Clash. Despite the fact that the pink of this skirt is a fabulous color for me, I am finding it a very difficult color to work with. (I bought it thrift, without even trying it on, for around $8, tags still on.) The reason this is difficult? Many of my tops, shirts, and jackets are very close to this color; just off enough to clash. Therefore, I am limited to neutrals or very subtly colored patterns.

How do you like this last one for the summery part of March?

I think it’s a little daring, but I’ll probably wear it, if not March then closer to summer.

  1. I love one and two! I would never have thought of wearing a skirt in that color and now I want one. 😉 I wear a lot of brown and white. In fact, white is my cheerful color. The best thing I did for myself is to get a white hooded semi-puffer coat for the winter blahs. I even carried a white shoulder bag with brown straps and brown strappy trim. Didn’t mind going out quite so much.

  2. I have a pink skirt that I like w/chocolate brown. Love the green shoes w/the pink too! What about the floral blouse under the white jacket?

  3. Thanks Damselfly! You’re an encouragement genius! 😉

Vildy ~ I love white coats! They are very cheerful and stylish for winter, I just don’t know that I could bring myself to do it. Cars are so dirty!

Jennifer ~ I tried the floral blouse first, but the collars just don’t work together. Hmmm … I have a white jean jacket. Perhaps I should try that with the floral blouse?

  4. Well…I like them all, but iron the skirt. I love the last one, but the boots are great, too. I’ve been wearing my sketchers with everything lately–I want warm feet!

  5. My favorite is #1. I find that jacket more figure flattering for you than the other white one … although a white jean jacket would be adorable. I’m also a big fan of the green shoe accent.

I wonder if there is a way to refine the final outfit. I think the sleeves a bit overwhelming — they dominate the ensemble, especially with the shirt knotted. What if you were to roll them up a bit?

How long is the sweater on combo number 2? I might try not belting it at all, and leaving the sweater out instead of tucked in.

  6. Thanks for the reminder, Carmen. I would have gotten up tomorrow and tried to wear outfit #1 and THEN remembered that it needed to be ironed. And thanks for stopping by again!

Wendy, #1 is my favorite too. I’m going to have to try the white jacket with some other things and just see if I like it at all; it’s not as fitted as I usually wear.

The floral blouse is very thin. I like your idea of rolling the sleeves up on the final outfit. Most likely if I wear it, it will be very warm out.

I did try the sweater out on combo number two, but I must not have liked it as well. Trouble is, I just don’t remember why. (I know you understand.)

  7. Go for number 4 as soon as weather allows, daring in a fun mom kind a way, not too too much, just summer playfulness!
    thanks for visiting my blog!

  8. Hi Karen! Thanks for dropping by and taking time to comment.

Unfortunately, here in WA, and with as cold as I run, it may not be March when I get around to wearing that one. But thankfully the skirt is thin enough corduroy to wear most of the summer! 🙂

BTW, Vildy, I ran across another one of those skirts today at the thrift store. It was a 13/14, but I bet other sizes pop up here and there. It was originally from Old Navy, you can probably find them there, too.

  9. I don’t remember your saying the skirt was corduroy. Cool, more texture. 🙂
And 4 season, too, between the texture and the color. Thanks for the tip that it’s from Old Navy.

Why (maybe) everybody likes the cutaway jacket on you best: it gives a sense of movement and energy as though you’re flying forward. Well, I don’t think people are really thinking precisely that but to me you look active and involved in it even when standing still. 🙂

  10. Well, I’m glad everyone said they liked the jacket. It’s interesting how it’s not always clear to me (yet!) exactly when to button the jacket and when to leave it open.

As to the sense of movement ~ the power of the diagonal at work, in addition to what you said. 🙂

  13. Hi, Rebecca,

This comment and question may seem a bit late, but I just found your page. I love your second outft, especially the knee socks with the boots. It’s a look I wear often, myself. The question I wish to as is this; do you have your socks cuffed down over the tops of your boots? I can’t really tell in the picture. I sometimes do this if the boots are really high, and I want to make the socks look thicker. Also, I always wear either pantyhose or stockings under my socks. Have you tried this? It really adds to the warth and makes the look much more finished. Would love to hear your comments.

  14. Hi Kimberley!

Yes, my socks are cuffed over the boots. I love the look! The problem with wearing stockings under this outfit would be that the skirt isn’t lined. In fact, I just biffed the skirt, I was so tired of trying to work with it. I don’t wear slips, they’re never the right length. I would definitely wear the outfit with pantyhose and socks – I would feel so much more dressed! – if the skirt were lined and wouldn’t stick to the pantyhose.

    Thanks for the comment!
