Fashion Lab: Giant Shoulders

Rebecca | outerwear, trends, silhouette, Fashion Lab | Thursday, 29 March 2007

Here it is, my $1 vintage 1980s leather jacket.  With skinny pants …imgp3280.JPG imgp3279.JPGand wide.

Agathe at Style Bytes blogged a few days ago about the possible return of giant shoulders. I suspect we will see, not what was overdone in the 80s, but an updated take on wide shoulders.

But who cares? I am going to wear this jacket. Any guesses with which pants?

Between My Peers Classic: The Six Figure Types

Rebecca | blogging, silhouette | Thursday, 29 March 2007

Aah! This post, as basic as it is, somehow got into “Private” mode. It probably hasn’t been available on this blog since I moved to Wordpress a few months ago. It’s a really important principle, so here goes:

The 6 figure types and how to ID yours:

  • Type A (formerly triangle) = shoulders narrower than hips, waist defined or not.
  • Type I (formerly rectangle or pencil) = shoulders and hips equally wide, waist slightly or not defined.
  • Type O (formerly oval) = shoulders sloped and equal to hips, waist filled in.
  • Type V (formerly wedge or inverted triangle) = shoulders wider than hips, waist defined or not.
  • Type X (formerly hour-glass) = shoulders straight and equal to hips, waist defined.
  • Type 8 (formerly figure-eight) = shoulders sloped and equal to, or slightly smaller than, hips; waist defined.

A possible paradigm shift: many people have trouble fitting their body into one of these shapes. That’s perfectly natural, there are infinite varieties of shapes. Instead, can you choose a silhouette of clothing which is easy for you to wear, given both your personality and your figure? In other words, the shape is whatever shape the clothes make on your figure.

How to Wear a Dress Over Pants

Rebecca | trends, length-balancing, texture, silhouette | Wednesday, 28 March 2007

Over at Individual Chic, Icy shows how to wear a dress over pants with style. (It’s easy to get it wrong and wind up looking messy.)

Her two rules:

  • Match the colors.
  • Keep the dress above the knee.

Additional artistic principles to keep in mind, if you are going to try this:

  • Stay within one of the six silhouettes.
  • Make sure the fabrics weights work together.
  • Go monochromatic, or break up the look using the 60/40 rule.

Why I will probably never try it:

  • It’s complicated.  I’m not.
  • My rise is long and my thighs are short.  Because of that I just don’t like or have short dresses.

Nevertheless I know people like this look; so I wanted you to see Icy’s post.  (Just for fun, here’s what I said about it last spring.  I still like aprons!)

What about you?  Are you wearing dresses for shirts?

TeenStyle Tuesday: Applying for a Job

Rebecca | Teens, the basics, shoes and accessories, uniform templates | Tuesday, 27 March 2007

Worn with these shoes, this outfit is perfect for applying for a job in food service. If she were job-hunting at the mall, she would swap out the moccasins for heels.wide-khakis-cardigan-and-not-athletic-shoes.JPG

Nobody expects a 16-year-old to show up wearing an Eddie Bauer suit to apply for a first job. What they do expect:

  • Whether picking up an application or being interviewed, the applicant should be dressed at least as formally as the workers in the establishment.
  • Respectful and respectable attire does not include leisure wear. In the exceptional case (farm work maybe?) jeans may be okay, but never flip-flops.
  • Come alone. Don’t pick up an application some random time you are at the mall with your friends, and leave your mom in the car if she must drive you.

Adapting the SAHM uniform template concept to a teen applying for a first job:

  • basic bottom (khakis, slacks, or skirt)

I love these wide-legged khakis, but a skirt or even black Dickies would also work.

  • + shirt in a flattering color (sleeve-length dependant on season, sweater for extreme cold)

Blues, greens, and neutrals are safe colors for job interviews. Never all black for a young person.

  • + layer for dressing up.

The cardigan is conservative and practical. Other options include blazers, jean jackets, or a nice collared shirt.

Clearly this is not a comprehensive guide to getting your first job.  What advice would you add?

Blog Design

I hope I win, I hope I win, I hope I win …

Just in case I don’t, here are a few questions for you:

  • Did you notice that I achieved success with the related entries plugin? YAY! Do you like it and do you think 3 posts is a good number to show?
  • If I don’t win a custom design, do you totally hate this theme? I had initially thought I would just keep this one and tinker with the colors, and eventually maybe figure out how to build a banner or something. (I guess I’m a die-hard do-it-yourselfer.)
  • What do you dislike the most about the mess I’ve got over there in the categories?

As always, any suggestions are appreciated. Just sometimes I don’t have the skills to implement them right away.

Just Linking Again

Rebecca | blogging, Fashion Lab | Monday, 26 March 2007

Check out Mama Archer’s department store clearance center score. $550 worth of stuff for $112! This statement:

“I very rarely shop for myself, something that tends to irritate my husband.”

reminds me of when I blogged about Biblical submission. The truth is nice husbands want to take good care of their wives.

Daddy Likey (who’s really a lovely girl) shares a creepy tale of shopping at  American Apparel. And we thought Abercrombie and Fitch was bad!

Another great rant: Damselfly’s Wardrobe Wednesday on body image. Comes complete with pictures of beautiful dresses. Note to self: go try on dresses!

Further randomness:

  • For this week’s Fashion Lab I will model the new vintage ’80s leather jacket with skinny pants and with wide. And maybe with something else.
  • Why do I instantly turn boring when in the company of relatives? Would a change of clothes help?

What’s Better Than Makeup?

Rebecca | color, wardrobe planning process | Saturday, 24 March 2007

What’s better than makeup? Something in your eye color, worn next to your face.

I’ve been astonished by the effectiveness of this a number of times recently when I changed during the day from what I was wearing into a brown shirt. Part of my wardrobe strategy is to have one of every kind of shirt I wear in brown.

Not to discourage you from wearing makeup. Have you tried E.L.F.?

The Capri Fashion Lab

Rebecca | length-balancing, shoes and accessories, Fashion Lab | Thursday, 22 March 2007

At some point, when I first started doing the Fashion Labs, we talked about whether or not full shoes ever looked good with capris. Here’s two different length capris (okay, well the same pair, adjusted differently), both shown with a dark shoe and a “leg color” shoe.
short-capris-light-shoes.JPGlong-capris-light-shoes.JPGshort-capris-dark-shoes.JPGlong-capris-dark-shoes.JPG
My photographer for this lab said my legs looked short and stubby.  Here’s what I had to say about capris last summer, other than thinking they were going to be out of style soon, and what I really look like when I wear them, Chaco’s and all.

What do you have to say about capris?

I’ll say this, after trying on black 12 inch inseam shorts (Casper doesn’t really look good in black, you know), I will never buy capris again. LOL
